In his presentation as a guest speaker during the AIIC Private Market Sector event (PRIMS) in London in January 2019, veteran British diplomat Boyd McCleary effectively summarises the historical context to and the reasons behind Britain’s uneasy relationship with Europe.

Starting with Churchill and the aftermath of the Second World War and going through the Thatcher years and the Blair and Cameron governments, Boyd clearly and engagingly illustrates Britain’s journey over the past few decades up to and beyond the 2016 Referendum. Interestingly, he highlights how the objections against European policies and institutions first raised in the 70s have resurfaced today. As someone who has an in-depth knowledge of the work of interpreters, he also attempts to analyse the potential impact of Brexit on our profession.
